Those of you who visited Tatton park on Sunday 2nd April might have been surprised to see the number of people having picnic there. It was sizdah be-dar: the day of nature in the Persian calendar, 13 days after the start of Persian New Year (Norouz), the Spring Equinox. On sizdah be-dar people go outdoors. They tend to have picnic, play sports and dance to music. On this day, sabzeh (sprout grown a couple of weeks in advance) which is one of the requirements for the new year, is placed in the river and with that all the bad luck in the new year is also washed away. Sabzeh is completely biodegradable and won't litter the river.
