Project intro:
Zâl and The Phoenix is a theatrical children’s production by Kent-based Iranian composer Shohreh Shakoory, based on a story from Shahnameh. Combining storytelling, singing, interactive animation, and live orchestra with traditional Iranian instruments, this work explores themes of diversity, loss, hope, love and forgiveness. Each performance day also includes children’s workshops, a lecture, and an exhibition space for Iranian craftspeople, musicians, and artists.
April Fredrick’s work as a soprano spans period music through to oratorio, opera, contemporary works, and devised and site-specific events. A frequent soloist in concert venues across the UK, she is a champion of new work on both the concert and opera stage, a recording artist for labels including SOMM and Nimbus, and an Associate Artist with the English Symphony Orchestra.
Shohreh Shakoory Iranian Composer/Pianist based in Kent UK , grow up and trained in Iran and moved to the UK in 1993, she received her Teacher's Diploma ( LTCL) from Trinity College London. Her career as a composer, pianist, and accompanist have included recitals at several venues as well as numerous festivals in the UK, Belgium, France and Iran, and she has recorded two of her compositions for Iran’s national Radio and Television station. Shohreh has been working on ‘Zal and the Phoenix’ since 2017.
